Host device : MacBook Pro 13inch 2017 model, 8Gb RAM, Core i5 CPU
- VirtualBox is an x86 virtualization hypervisor. It only runs on an x86 platform. See While Rosetta 2 will run many x86 apps very well on an M1 Mac, virtualization products are not supported per this Apple document.
- VirtualBox is great for simple home use or if you need to use your Mac for business occasionally. If you’re just looking for a simple software to run one old Windows app on your mac, VirtualBox will work fine, as long as the app doesn’t need lots of 3D rendering or complicated processing.
You unfortunately cannot run VirtualBox on Macs with Apple’s M1 chip. If this will change in the future is currently unknown but it doesn’t appear very likely as the Oracle has not said anything about it whereas others like VMWare Fusion and Parallels have both had support pledged for them.

I am getting very slow performance on this guest, when moving windows it stutters. When playing short MP4 videos in VLC, the app goes non-responsive and is incredibly slow to respond to input.
The relevant VM settings are :-

Base Memory : 2048 Mb
CPU : 2
Acceleration > Virtualization : Default
Hardware virtualization : Enabled nested paging (no other option appears here)

The only difference I can see in the VM options it that my PC has the additional option of 'VT-x AMD-V' Hardware virtualization.
